Over the past month, I have had the opportunity to attend local AGC meetings in Abilene, Houston and El Paso. The major issue discussed at each of these meetings continues to be safety, which is my favorite topic. I appreciate AGC’s emphasis on this top priority.

TxDOT and other DOTs across the country are exploring innovative contracting methods for select transportation projects, which consider factors in addition to “low bid.” Innovative contracting methods can speed project completion, reduce inconvenience to the traveling public, and provide a clearer vision of what’s expected from the contractor.

As we search for ways to use construction funding more effectively, advances in technology offer unlimited opportunities for cost savings. At the recent Southwest Construction Peer Network Exchange in Salt Lake City, a session on implementing digital jobsites provided a wealth of information on everything from Web-based information sharing to automated machine control.
