As we begin 2017, the Texas Department of Transportation is preparing for two very important events: first, our 100th year of service to the citizens of Texas, and second is the 85th Legislative Session and our department’s Sunset review.
For the last year, here at the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), we have been working with our local partners to develop a plan for how best to address Texas’ growing transportation needs. That plan is the 2017 Unified Transportation Program (UTP).
In late August, the Texas Transportation Commission approved a $70 billion Unified Transportation Program, or UTP. The UTP is TxDOT’s 10-year transportation planning document. It includes highway projects as well as rail, freight, aviation, public transportation and state and coastal waterway programs.
With the inclusion of voter approved Proposition 1 and Proposition 7 funding, the 10-year Unified Transportation Program is anticipated to increase over $38 billion --- from $28 billion to over $66 billion --- or an average of $6.6 billion per year.
