AGC Packs In Over 400 At The 7th Annual Executive Safety Conference

Written by  Paul Causey

A record 420 folks attended the 7th Annual Executive Safety Conference at the Palmer Event Center, with 25 Award Recipients of the first ever Texas Bluebonnet Safety Awards. Eleven were also recognized with the National AGC Safety Award as well.

The theme for this year’s conference was “Mission Zero: Leading the Charge.” Luncheon speakers included AGC President Chad Clark and TxDOT Director of District Operations Randy Hopmann. Presentation of our first Texas Bluebonnet Safety Awards followed immediately after lunch and highlighted--for the first time--exemplary safety programs from both AGC contractor members and TxDOT Districts statewide.

Keynote speaker Jim Bearden, a former Marine rifle company commander and Bronze Star Medal recipient, called upon his 31 years of leadership and experience into what it takes to reach our goal of “Zero Fatalities.” Jim’s candid remarks about a company’s safety culture focused on the difference between what sounds good and what works.

Afterwards, TxDOT Director of Traffic Operations Michael Chacon moderated a distinguished panel of constructors including: Steve Cardwell (Dan Williams Co.), John Roddy (The Lane Construction Corporation), David Walls (Austin Industries), and Stan Swiatek (Waco District Engineer), TxDOT. Each panelist briefly described the characteristics of their safety cultures and their priorities to secure a safe and productive work environment.

All in all, the conference was truly the place to be. Safety is an everyday practice. Jerral Wyer used a quote from the “Babe” in his closing remarks that explains it this way, “The home runs of yesterday don’t win today’s games.”

So, on this day, August 22, 2018, we celebrate the victories of yesterday knowing that tomorrow is a whole new game. Congratulations to all the award winners! Keep up the good work.
