On April 3, 2019, The associated General Contractors of America held its annual convention in Denver, Colorado and selected 57 companies as winners of the 2019 Construction Safety Excellence Award (CSEA). Of those companies, only one in the country stands out among highway contractors in the 600,000-man hour category: Ed Bell Construction Company.

Ed Bell Construction Company can legitimately claim to be the best of the best. They were not only selected as the First-Place winner in the highway and transportation division for 2019, but were also selected as the 2018 first place winner as well and the only Texas contractor to place in any division. In 2016, they placed second and in 2015 placed third.

The purpose of the CSEA is to recognize construction companies who excel at safety performance. The CSEA closely examines each candidate's commitment to safety and occupational health management and risk control. Unlike other safety award programs that limits the criteria to frequency rates, the CSEA selection process is considerably more comprehensive. Each application is reviewed for evidence of company management commitment, active employee participation, safety training, work site hazard identification and control, and safety program innovation.

Participation in the CSEA requires each company to focus on its safety program and the commitment to make safety the number one issue within the organization. To do so multiple times exhibits that commitment to create a safety culture that won’t allow accidents to ever occur.

Ed Bell has worked hard to develop a culture of safety within their organization, and it shows in their day-to-day operations. When asked what the greatest take away for Ed Bell was in participating in the CSEA, Safety Director Kerry Hurd said, “Listening to other contractors’ presentations is one of the greatest takeaways. You have the best of the best in the country and you have an opportunity to learn what makes another contractor’s safety program successful.”

When discussing the program’s effect on his company’s safety program, Kerry said, “We see constant improvements in our safety program from year to year. The CSEA program challenges us to improve.”

When asked why other companies should choose to participate, Kerry said, “If companies are truly serious about improving their safety culture, the CSEA program is designed to help you focus on what your safety program is actually doing for your company. Do you simply have a ‘safety program’ or do you have a ‘safety culture?’”

Congratulations to Ed Bell Construction Company for a job well done.
