AGC Members Go to Central Oregon for 2014 Management Conference

Written by

Located in the year-round recreational wonderland of Central Oregon, Sunriver Resort is the setting for AGC’s 2014 Management Conference. Whether you crave relaxation or excitement, world-renowned golf courses, luxurious spas, fine cuisine, or a vast array of outdoor activities encouraged by the Northwest’s climate, Sunriver Resort has enough to satisfy a broad range of tastes and expectations. Coupled with an informative panel of legislators and state and federal regulatory experts, the conference will prove to be a worthwhile escape from the Texas summer.

Interestingly, Sunriver’s origins are a far cry from the well-appointed environs we will enjoy this year. In March of 1943, the property was first realized as a WWII Army base named Camp Abbot.

Nestled at the foot of the Cascade Mountains, the property was developed as a U.S. Engineer Replacement Training Center. It was selected for both its isolation and its unique similarity to the European theater where American troops confronted Nazi and Fascist forces. Where the 10th tee of the Sunriver northern golf course is now located, soldiers once learned how to dodge bullets in an obstacle course. Where families now reside in cozy mountain lodges, men once lived in foxholes dug out of snow. And what is now a modern recreation haven with swimming pool, tennis courts, and bicycle paths, was then a military installation fully equipped with anti-tank demolition facilities, bayonet courts, as well as rifle and grenade ranges.

While the excitement of the resort is admittedly less death-defying than in years past, the property still hosts plenty of fun and excitement. The resort boasts 63 holes of championship golf and a nine-hole putting course, 28 tennis courts, a marina with kayak and canoe rentals, horse stables, bike rentals and 35 miles of paved bike paths, a private airport for noncommercial flights, three swimming pools, a waterslide and children’s pool, five restaurants and lounges, a full-service spa and fitness center, an observatory and nature center, childcare services and youth programs, and a complimentary intra-resort shuttle to take you around the 3,800-acre grounds.

AGC of Texas staff has put together a well-balanced conference peppered with group activities and individual exploration time, an ambitious conference lineup, along with several dinners, receptions, and entertainment.

The golf tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, June 24th with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. at the Meadows Golf Course at Sunriver Resort. If pampered relaxation is more your speed, the Sage Springs Club and Spa is offering a 25-percent discount to AGC attendees. If your children crave some activities designed for them, the resort offers Fort Funnigan, designed for children ages 3-10 for full day, half day, and evening programs.

In addition to the golf tournament, AGC has scheduled additional group activities. Monday afternoon is the “Big Eddy” whitewater rafting trip on the Deshutes River, which will include three miles of river and a class-four rapid. Tuesday includes a half-day fly fishing adventure, and a two-hour trail ride.

Conference speakers are selected closer to the event date in order to get the most relevant topics included. At this time, Representatives Darby, Harless, Otto, Miller, Kuempel and Larson have all confirmed their attendance, along with Senators Whitmire and Hegar. The following is a preliminary schedule of events for attendees:
