Effective communication is vital to any organization’s success, and TxDOT shares its story with many audiences, to include the media, elected officials, transportation industry partners and the public. But, I believe the most important audience we must connect with is our 11,500 employees.
In an agency as large and geographically diverse as ours, connecting with one another can be challenging, especially when more than half of our work force is out in the field, performing duties every day that are so vital to TxDOT’s mission.
In order to address this communications challenge, in the fall of 2014 we launched the TN Network pilot program in the Beaumont and San Angelo districts. This groundbreaking network gives employees up-to-date agency news, district information and real-time weather radars on specially equipped TVs installed in maintenance offices.
We tested the network for a year and the feedback from employees has been tremendously positive.
Employees say they feel more knowledgeable about the department and better connected to their peers. Therefore, I am happy to announce that the TN Network is expanding into ten more districts in the coming weeks. And, the goal is to have TN Network monitors installed in all twenty five districts by this time next year.
This new internal communications tool is a gamechanger, as it allows us to connect with each other in a way that’s never been possible before. Simply put, engaged and informed employees are best-in-class employees. And best-in-class employees create a best-in-class agency.
