I may not be the only person sick of the word “change” after the last four years, but every once in a great while a group of people get together, invest in change, and make something spectacular out of it.

If you attended AGC’s first-ever Scholarship Gala during the August letting, you got to see just that. Led by President Bob Lanham and supported by our vast network of industry leaders, over four hundred people came together to make this night a wonderful evening, and hugely profitable for our scholarship program. Decked out in “Texas after Five” attire, members participated in live and silent auctions, feasted on Four Seasons cuisine, and cut a rug dancing to Ray Benson and the famous Asleep at the Wheel Band.

Benson, named 2011 Texan of the Year, played his customary Western Swing, which was this year named by our legislature as “The Official Music of Texas.” Factor in the addition of highway contractors from all around our great state, and you’d be hard pressed to get more Texan than that.

The combined efforts of our major sponsors, gold sponsors, and auction sponsors created an astounding $415,000 for the scholarship fund, to be used to shape today’s youth into tomorrow’s industry leaders. This figure is easily a record amount for our fundraising efforts, and comes just shy of doubling the efforts of the previous year.

I would like to take a moment to once more recognize those individuals who contributed to this lovely August evening and made the gala such a resounding success. We expect the membership to build on this evening’s accomplishments in years to come, preserving the scholarship program and continuing to invest in tomorrow.
