The 2012 surface transportation law, “Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century” (MAP-21), expires in less than seven months. While the primary House and Senate committees of jurisdiction have launched aggressive reauthorization efforts of hearings and other outreach activities, the fundamental reality remains that the timing, duration, and size of the next surface transportation authorization bill is directly contingent on how Congress addresses the Highway Trust Fund’s (HTF) repeated revenue shortfalls.

As I write this column on January 31, I’ve been flabbergasted, to say the least, at what took place during the first three weeks of the year.

The level of activity with regard to passage of our constitutional amendment to increase our highway funding by 1.4 billion dollars is incredible.

With the March 4 Texas primary election upon us, most of our state legislature races will be decided this month, or by the end of runoffs following shortly thereafter.

A majority of the Texas Legislature will return for the 84th session when it convenes in January 2015.

Late January, AGC of America’s Senior Executive Director of Government Affairs Jeff Shoaf sent a letter to the members of AGC of Texas to commend them for being leaders in the drive to implement and use BIPAC to regularly send letters to state and federal legislators on issues of utmost important to the industry.

On April 7-11, we will recognize 2014 National Work Zone Awareness Week. TxDOT activities across the state will provide an opportunity to educate the public on the hazards of traveling through work zones, and I invite all of you to participate by attending these events.
